The King got the kingdom through the War of the Ninepenny Kings, also known as the fifth Blackfyre rebellion led by Maelys the Monstrous, and even sought to lead his armies personally despite his fragile health. While Jaehaerys would be talked out of this, it demonstrates a certain mettle others would not have expected of their ruler. Following the inferno and the deaths of Aegon and his heir Duncan, Jaehaerys was crowned king. While the common folk believe Jaehaerys proved himself a weak king during his short reign, he ruled for just three years, but that’s not entirely true. In the end, Aegon would perish during a terrible fire, which became known as the Tragedy at Summerhall.
Daenerys
According to various Targaryen timelines around the internet, Daenerys is a distant niece of Princess Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra’s second son Lucerys (Harvey Sadler) is also, likely, the son of Harwin Strong. After the death of Laenor, who is perceived to be his father, his grandfather Corlys Velaryon, says that Lucerys will one day inherit Driftmark. Later, during an argument, Lucerys is responsible for taking the eye of his uncle Aemond. This moment will come to haunt him years later when they both approach Borros Baratheon in the hopes of securing the loyalty of Storm’s End for their respective mothers.

This didn’t go well, and Aerys was taken hostage by Lord Darklyn for six months. As Lord Tywin besieged Duskendale, Aerys, who was trapped in the dungeons, grew more and more paranoid, and by the time the defiance of Diskendale was brought to an end, he was well and truly mad. Unfortunately, it was around now that Aerys began to demonstrate a rather mercurial personality, flitting from uncompleted project to uncompleted project.
Prince Consort Daemon Targaryen
Across the realm, battles broke out, and the threat was only ended when Daemon and his two sons, Aegon and Aemon, died at the Battle of the Redgrass Field. With peace restored, the rest of Daemon’s rule was peaceful, and he eventually earned the nickname ‘the good’ for his wisdom and peaceful nature. Following the death of Aegon the Unworthy, his son Daeron ascended to the throne as Daeron II. The new king began his reign by addressing the rot his father had allowed to fester in the capital. As such, Daeron reformed the City Watch and rebuilt the Small Council to rid it of his father’s lackeys.

They were House Targaryen, and they ruled for centuries until one of their descendants fumbled the bag and let Robert Baratheon usurp the throne. Then came the story of Game of Thrones… and we all know how that turned out. In the first episode of House of the Dragon, two dreamers who are pivotal to the Targaryens' conquest of Westeros are mentioned. The first, known as Daenys the Dreamer, was the maiden daughter or a Targaryen nobleman in Valyria, the ancestral land where the family lived before settling at the island Dragonstone. Daenys had a dream about the destruction of Valyria, and she convinced their family to leave before the land was destroyed in a volcanic cataclysm, known as the Doom of Valyria.
Rhaenyra goes on to have her own children, who stand to inherit her claim. The Targaryen family tree is admittedly complicated—though compact thanks to the family’s penchant for incest. Crowned at the age of 14, Jaehaerys Targaryen had the longest and most peaceful reign of any Targaryen king. He married his sister Alysanne and together they had 14 children, though only nine would survive into adulthood, and only two would outlive him.
Jacaerys Velaryon
However, his ascent to the throne is disputed by his older half-sister, Princess Rhaenyra, who was her father's designated heir. As a result, this leads to the civil war the premise of the show revolves around. The first-born of King Viserys and only living child of the late Aemma Arryn, Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) was announced her father’s direct heir and grew up preparing to sit on the Iron Throne.

Ultimately, though, Jaeherys’ poor health would get the better of him, and he’d pass away after a short illness at the age of 37, leaving his son Aerys II to take the throne. Arguably the worst Targaryen king to ever sit on the Iron Throne, Aegon IV earned the name the unworthy for his cruelty and greed. To make matters worse, he constantly quarreled with his son and heir, Daeron.

As the eventual queen, Helaena is popular in King’s Landing and beloved by the people of Westeros. She will become fiercely protective of her own three children, but the events that play out during the civil war will not bode well for either her or her progeny. Rhaenyra is Viserys’s firstborn child, the daughter of his first wife Aemma.
Yohn Royce fostered young Lord Robyn Arryn at his home of Runestone, sent his troops north to save Sansa Stark from Ramsay Bolton, and became a supporter of Sansa’s claim to the North. The only Hightower we really saw on Game of Thrones was in Bran’s flashback vision of Jon Snow’s birth at the Tower of Joy. Ned’s sister Lyanna died in the tower giving birth to her and Rhaegar’s son, who was raised by Ned Stark as his own bastard, Jon Snow. By the end of the eighth episode, Baela and Rhaena are engaged to marry their cousins-once-removed and step-brothers Jacaerys and Lucerys, respectively. At the start of the series, Daemon is in a loveless marriage to Lady Rhea Royce, who resides in the Vale of Arryn.
Her father was King Aerys II Targaryen, otherwise known as The Mad King, whose death at the hands of Ser Jaime Lannister marked the end of the Targaryen dynasty ruling on the Iron Throne. A skilled dragonrider like her brother and mother, Laena rides the largest dragon in the Seven Kingdoms, Vhagar. Due to their conflicting interests, Prince Daemon is in a fierce conflict with Viserys's Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). In the seventh episode, Prince Aemond loses an eye in a fight with his Velaryon nephews after he roguishly mounted the dragon Vhagar and claimed it as his own. Following the death of her father, Aegon is crowned as King on the Iron Throne and Helaena becomes his Queen Consort. The pair do not have a happy marriage as Aegon continues to pursue his own sexual appetites outside of their union.
Aemond threatens Lucerys, who is later eaten, alongside his dragon Arrax, by Aemond’s dragon Vhagar. He married Jocelyn Baratheon, who was not a Targaryen (good!) but was his aunt (not so good!) But Aemon died before his father did, leaving behind a daughter, Rhaenys Targaryen. But there’s that pesky looming question of who will inherit the crown, and when Aemma dies and the king remarries Alicent Hightower (told you she’d be back), things start to get testy in the Red Keep. Rhaenyra’s oldest son, Jacaerys (Leo Hart, and then Hary Collett) is supposed to inherit the throne after his mother. However, his dubious parentage will likely play a role in determining his future. Though ostensibly the son of Rhaenyra’s husband Laenor Velaryon, the audience knows that the couple have reached an agreement in which they can both have extramarital affairs because Laenor is gay.
Anyway, Daemion eventually had a son, Lord Aerion, who would name his first son Aegon. As we learn in the fantasy series, eventually, this young dragonlord would rise to lead the house and turn his ambitions west to the Seven Kingdoms, seeking to unite them under his banners. So the Targaryen family tree took root in Westeros, and the House of the Dragon began. Little is written of this time in the books, but one interesting note is that Aegon’s second son, Aerys, appears to have been made heir over his eldest brother. Even weirder, Aerys’ third-born son, Daemion Targaryen, inherited Dragonstone.
He had to decide between his daughter Rhaenyrs and Aemon’s brother Baelon, and he ultimately chose Baelon. But then Baelon died before taking the throne, and Jaehaerys had to call a Great Council. Boremund is an ancestor of King Robert Baratheon and his brothers Stannis and Renly, the royal family by the time of Game of Thrones. King Robert led a rebellion against the mad King Aerys Targaryen, earning him the title of ‘Usurper’ among Targaryen devotees.
Rhaena Targaryen (Eva Ossai-Gerning, and then Phoebe Campbell) is the younger sister of Baela. Baela is caught putting her egg in the fire in hopes that it will eventually produce a dragon. In order to become a dragonrider Rhaena will likely have to claim a dragon for herself, a harder task than simply bonding with a dragon whose egg was gifted to her in childhood. Joffrey Velaryon, the youngest of Rhaenyra’s sons, is just a baby when Rhaenyra and Laenor decide to leave King’s Landing because of the rumors circulating about their children’s parentage.
