Who's who in 'House of the Dragon': The Targaryen family tree

house of the dragon family tree

The series is based on Fire & Blood, the first of George R.R. Martin’s two volumes that cover the history of the Targaryens and their wild dragonriding ways. These books take place hundreds of years before what happens on Game of Thrones, according to HBO. As the curtains lift on HotD, Westeros is a relatively peaceful place, but civil war in the Targaryen family is brewing. Later called “The Dance of the Dragons,” the war concerns who will be ascending the Iron Throne and, once again, gender is at the heart of the issue.

When he ascended the throne, he followed a long and prosperous rule by Jaehaerys and basically just tried to hold things down. While he is a decent dude, he is not necessarily an exciting or charismatic leader—though he tried his best to keep the peace. When his daughter Rhaenyra turned eight years old, he named her heir, causing issues within his own reign. Still, though, you should never underestimate a dragon, and during the events of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen manages to revive the family’s fortunes (With the help of her dragons). However, the story of House Targaryen is a long one, going back centuries, if not millennia.

Viserys

Aegon had gathered his closest family and friends at SUmmerhall, including his heir Jaeherys and his grandson Aerys, in the hopes of reawakening the dragons. No one knows what happened, but things went terribly wrong, and the castle was consumed by fire. As Aerys died having fathered no sons, the crown passed to his youngest brother Maekar (Rhaegal had since died choking on a piece of pie).

How are the House of the Dragon characters related to Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow?

She was engaged to her cousin Lucerys Velaryon in an attempt to secure Driftmark, of which Lucerys is the heir. Laenor is a skilled warrior and the heir to House Velaryon, and he is also a dragon-rider. Laenor's father is Corlys Velaryon and his mother is Rhaenys, who came very close to sitting on the Iron Throne.

(Though, in fairness, it’s pronounced “Ennis.”) But he overcame that to become a kind ruler until his brother killed him in cold blood. He married Alyssa Velaryon, a descendent of the one other Valyrian family that survived the downfall of that city—though crucially Velaryons are not dragonriders. Still, Velaryons became major players in the game of thrones fairly early on by allying themselves with the Targaryens. Jaehaerys ruled for 55 years, but he had to make a difficult decision when his heir, Prince Aemon, died.

He’s a hothead who believes he could do everything better if he were king instead of his stupid brother. Matt Smith, who plays Daemon in the show, describes him as “all swords and knives.” He’s charismatic and has many friends (especially in the more disreputable corners of King’s Landing), but also some powerful enemies. Among them is Ser Otto Hightower, who serves as Hand of the King to Viserys, just as he served his grandfather before him.

A Guide to the Complicated Targaryen Family Tree

By the end of the series, the lord of Storm’s End is Gendry Baratheon, King Robert’s bastard son who was legitimised by Queen Daenerys. The Baratheons unseated at the tourney by Prince Daemon Targaryen are Lord Boremund and his son Borros, of Storm’s End. Lord Boremund Baratheon is the uncle through her mother’s side of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (whom he quasi-treasonously styled as “The Queen Who Never Was”). Though Boremund swore fealty to Princess Rhaenerya at the end of the episode, he supported his niece’s claim to the throne over that of her cousin Viserys I. As Cersei and Jaime show in Game of Thrones, twins run in the Lannister line. Two centuries before Queen Cersei sat on the Iron Throne, a pair of identical Lannister twins are part of the Targaryen royal court in House of the Dragon.

Here’s a rundown of the dragons you can expect to see in House of the Dragon. Sadly, Balerion, the mighty dragon ridden by Aegon the Conqueror, likely won’t be appearing unless there are flashbacks to Viserys’s youth, as he died during Jaehaerys I’s reign. House of the Dragon takes place two centuries before the events in Game of Thrones, so Daenerys’s character is no nowhere to be found in the plot.

And by the time we get to the beginning of Game Of Thrones, Westeros has recently seen the fall of the 17th and final Targaryen king, Aerys II, after the brutal war known as Robert’s Rebellion. Daenerys would have been the 18th, and the first Targaryen queen, but we know how that turned out. King Viserys knows that with no living male heirs (at least not at this point in his life), the crown will likely pass to Daemon if he doesn’t do something about it while he still can.

She is the cousin of Viserys and Daemon and has two children, Laenor and Laena. We don’t know all that much about Helaena’s personality, but her role in the Dance of Dragons will be pivotal. She’s the second of Alicent’s four children, rides the silver dragon Dreamfyre, and, unfortunately, she is destined to marry her skeevy older brother Aegon.

Led by Aegor Rivers (Yet another of Aegon IV’s bastards), the third Blackfyre Rebellion threatened the stability of the realm until Haegon I was slain and Rivers imprisoned. As the enemies of the Freehold fought for control of the Valyrian’s former empire, generations of Targaryens lived and died on Dragonstone. Gaemon the Glorious followed Aenar as the lord of Dragonstone, and in turn, his son Aegon (not that one) inherited the castle.

Ultimately, all of this may have just been Daemon’s way of getting as close to the throne as he could. But for all his enemies suspect him of plotting to take over the throne, Daemon, a.k.a. the “rogue prince,” has better things to do, like seducing his brother’s daughter Rhaenyra and conquering his own kingdom. Daemon is congenial but aggressive, and he has a bad habit of killing all his potential love rivals. He falls for Rhaenys’s daughter Laena Velaryon — a convenient match in terms of maintaining his place at court — but Laena’s already engaged.

The new series takes place 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born, and shows a fight for succession that lead to an all-out civil war among the platinum-blonde clan. Joffrey’s complex family history, as well as his being at the very center of the nation’s civil war alongside his two older brothers, seems to have taken its toll. He grows up reckless and determined to prove himself worthy of their bravery and courage, despite being far too young for fighting. Titled the Prince of Dragonstone, Jace rides the dragon Vermax and carries out his duties as Rhaenyra’s heir faithfully and loyally. Still, the growing rivalry between his family and Alicent’s ultimately consumes him, along with nearly everyone around him.

Dany and Viserys’ oldest brother is long gone before the events of Game of Thrones begin, but is a key player in those events. After Episode 7, Baela lived with her grandmother Rhaenys in Driftmark, while Rhaena moved in with her father and Rhaenyra at Dragonstone. Though we don't spend much time with them in the show, Baela grows up to be a dragon-rider and tomboy à la Arya Stark, while Rhaena loves dresses and dancing. As the only surviving house of the Valyrian dragonlords, House Targaryen had the last known dragonriders — people who are able to bond with and mount a dragon. Even though Rhaenys’ claim to the throne was passed over for her cousin Viserys, Corlys and Rhaenys have hella status without actually having to rule the kingdom. They’re powerful, they’re rich, and their kids have royal blood, making their bloodline ideal to marry back into the Targaryen family. The king and queen at the start of House of the Dragon are Viserys and Aemma, the children of Baelon and Daella Targaryen, respectively. They have one daughter, Rhaenyra, and hope to have a son, mainly because in the absence of a son the throne might pass to Viserys’ brother Daemon. Baelon had two sons with his sister Alyssa and became the new heir after his brother Aemon died. Then he died, leaving Jaehaerys and Alysanne with exactly zero eligible sons to inherit the throne directly.
